Course description 

Figma is a collaborative design tool used for creating user interfaces, website designs, and app prototypes. It allows multiple users to work simultaneously on a project, making it the industry-standard for UI works and collaboration.

Course Objectives

In this comprehensive course, you will learn:

  • How to navigate the Figma interface and utilize its various tools and features.
  • The distinctions between pages, frames, groups, auto layout, components, and assets.
  • Fundamental design principles such as composition, typography, and user experience design.
  • The process of creating interactive prototypes using Figma’s prototyping feature.
  • Different types of interactions, implementing overlays, and utilizing animation transitions and smart animate.
  • Effective collaboration in teams using Figma’s collaborative capabilities.
  • Where to find icons, templates, UI kits, design systems, and how to use plugins.
  • Applying your Figma knowledge to real-world scenarios by designing websites, mobile app interfaces, posters, and presentations.

Course Requirements

  • Prerequisites: No prior experience in design or Figma is required.
  • Equipment: Students will need access to a computer or laptop with an internet connection. Figma is a web-based application, and no installation is required. (Figma has a desktop application that students can download on both Mac and Windows, if that is what you prefer. The instructor would be primarily using the desktop application.)
  • Students will need to create an account to utilize Figma.

About the instructor

Margaret Lu, an upcoming MHCI graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University and recent graduate from Georgia Institute of Technology with a BS in Industrial Design will guide you through this immersive course.
