Figma is a collaborative design tool used for creating user interfaces, website designs, and app prototypes. It allows multiple users to work simultaneously on a project, making it the industry-standard for UI works and collaboration.
Course Objectives
In this comprehensive course, you will learn:
- How to navigate the Figma interface and utilize its various tools and features.
- The distinctions between pages, frames, groups, auto layout, components, and assets.
- Fundamental design principles such as composition, typography, and user experience design.
- The process of creating interactive prototypes using Figma’s prototyping feature.
- Different types of interactions, implementing overlays, and utilizing animation transitions and smart animate.
- Effective collaboration in teams using Figma’s collaborative capabilities.
- Where to find icons, templates, UI kits, design systems, and how to use plugins.

Course Requirements
- Prerequisites: No prior experience in design or Figma is required.
- Equipment: Students will need access to a computer or laptop with an internet connection. Figma is a web-based application, and no installation is required. (Figma has a desktop application that students can download on both Mac and Windows, if that is what you prefer. The instructor would be primarily using the desktop application.)
- Students will need to create an account to utilize Figma.

Margaret Lu, an upcoming MHCI graduate student at Carnegie Mellon University and recent graduate from Georgia Institute of Technology with a BS in Industrial Design will guide you through this immersive course.
