Design Thinking Principles

Design thinking, in some form or another, has been used throughout the ages by inventors, philosophers, and scholars to address complex or challenging problems and pave the way for creative solutions. As a cornerstone of modern innovation, it has applications for both digital design and physical construction.

Its use is second nature to creative professionals such as artists, architects, and graphic designers, but it has applications in scientific fields for engineers, inventors, and IT professionals as well. Design thinking is not a specific algorithm, but more of a framework to process an idea and systematically bring it from vision to reality.

At this design thinking course, a student will learn the elements of the user-centered, prototype-driven design thinking process, a standard design method to test and refine their potential solutions.  This will be a project based course; each student will be expected to take home not only the new tools and increased confidence necessary for tackling complex problems, but also their completed prototype as proof of their efforts.

What you will get out from this course:

This will be a project based course; students will be expected to:

  • Learn the elements of the standard design thinking process
    • User-centered, prototype-driven design is the cornerstone to advanced design.
  • Improved interview and observation techniques
    • Better understand target users, market, and competitors
  • Understand how to define and reframe problems
  • Use rapid prototyping and iteration to solve complex design problems
  • Be able to translate what they’ve learned to their own innovative projects
  • Take home their own finished projects as a result of this course

Design Tools/Skills You Will Learn:

  • Research methodologies
  • Low-fidelity prototyping tool (POP)
  • High-fidelity prototyping tool (Axure, Proto.io, etc.)
  • Mock Up/Visual design tools (Sketch App)
  • Demo tools, etc.
  • User Testing methodologies

Duration of this course: 2 weeks

Instructor:

This will be a design thinking course taught by Mr. Tingbin Tang, an interactive design professor at San Jose State University and former director of the design department at China Central Academy of Fine Arts. He’s the current CEO of Nearal and former CEO of Gopackup, Qifang and Peopeo; his artworks have been permanently collected by The Chicago Athenaeum, an International Museum of Architecture and Design, and have won him numerous international design awards. His work has been reported by Time Magazine, CNN, ABC news, and many other media and press. As an entrepreneur and innovator, he will expand your creative thinking to create a more unique design perspective.

(Sketch App)
