Course Overview

AP English Language and Composition is an English language course created by the College Board as part of the Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum. It is typically the first AP English course taken by high school students on the Advanced Placement track. AP English Language and Composition is an introductory college-level composition course. As stated on the College Board website, students cultivate their understanding of writing and rhetorical arguments through reading, analyzing, and writing texts as they explore topics like rhetorical situation, claims and evidence, reasoning and organization, and style.

In this 10-week workshop, students will follow a streamlined curriculum for AP English Language and Composition. Through weekly meetings, students will learn and practice the three types of essays covered in the course: synthesis essays, rhetorical analysis essays, and argument essays. Through personalized instruction, students will learn tactics for analyzing text, reading prompts, crafting clear arguments, citing sources, and using compelling language to write high-scoring essays. In the process, students will develop good writing habits that will prove useful in any writing situation.

In addition to its three essays, the AP English Language and Composition test requires students to complete several multiple-choice question-and-answer sections. This workshop will give students the opportunity to take official multiple-choice sections pulled from past AP English Language and Composition tests. Each week, students will learn effective reading comprehension strategies and test-taking tips to help them succeed in the multiple-choice section of the AP English Language and Composition test.

Many Bay Area high schools do not offer this class, and instead they offer an American literature honors class. This workshop is highly-recommended for students interested in taking the AP English Language and Composition test without taking a full-year high school AP English Language and Composition class. It is also an excellent supplementary course for students currently enrolled in AP English Language and Composition at their high schools. Lastly, the class is beneficial for high school students looking to improve their English reading and writing skills in preparation for upper-division high school and college classes. Successful completion of the AP English Language and Composition test can earn students college credit at many degree-awarding undergraduate institutions across the country.
